Current status of project:
- We are in the process of taking the ideas we have about our project and converting them into concrete details we can develop further.
Work Completed in the Last Week:
- We have identified our mentor, formulated a project idea, and met with our mentor to discuss the scope of our project. Our project will be known as MobileDoctor – Smartphone Bioelectric Body Monitor, a heart rate monitor that uses electrodes that are in a wearable configuration to record ECG or EEG signals of an individual over an extended period of time. This data will be transmitted in real time to a smartphone which will analyze it in order to identify whether or not the input signal is abnormal, and will subsequently relay this information to health monitoring systems (hospitals, emergency lines, etc.). Our mentor for this project is Dr. Dennis Barbour, and his extensive knowledge of biomedical instrumentation will be vital for designing the hardware for our project.
Work Planned for Next Week:
- We will formulate our project scope for submission, including a decision regarding the amount and type of work we can do on the device with the time limitation of one semester. Furthermore, we plan to have another weekly meeting with our mentor at the end of the week.
Anything needed from mentor/client or TA or instructor to continue work:
- From the Instructor and TA – We will need to communicate either in person or via email to discuss the scope of our project. Specifically, our product has both a hardware and software component to it. We are certain that we would like to write the software for our project, but we are unsure of whether we should build the hardware, or only design it. Dr. Barbour has advised us to proceed with only designing it at the moment, and then build the hardware if we have extra time at the end of the semester. He advised us to seek your input as well.
- From the Mentor – We will need support in the form of regular meetings that will allow us to successfully proceed through each step of the process, so that we can design a functional prototype of our product by the end of the semester.
